ORION: An introduction to RMU's Suspension Design

WHAT IS ORION?

At the center of NIGHTTRAIN is a mid-pivot adaptation of Weagle's next generation 6-bar Orion suspension, paired with his patented dual idler drivetrain layout; a dual chain design already proven on the World Cup Downhill circuit and that provides unheard of drivetrain efficiency and reduces pedal feedback compared to traditional high pivot systems. The 6-bar flex stay Orion suspension is configured in a mid-pivot layout, capitalizing on the best parts of conventional and high pivot suspensions without the drawbacks of either. The result is a bike that maintains traction and momentum through rough terrain while remaining efficient and composed under power, climbing, and braking.

“Orion started out as a linkage suspension solution for motocross bikes, which by nature need to be supple and controlled on power,” said Dave Weagle. “Years later, I adapted Orion in a 4-bar layout to mountain bikes that could benefit from that supple ride, geared towards long distance days in the saddle. The next generation of Orion debuting with RMU is different. The system has been completely reconfigured to provide support and suspension control similar to what I would design for a World Cup DH race bike. The result is a suspension feel completely unlike any of the past Orion layouts. It’s supple on the small bumps, but when you get into berms and want to pop features on the trail, there’s support to work with, and as soon as you get into the bigger square-edged hits, that support gives way to big bump compliance. The harder you push it, the more it rewards you, which has been a hallmark of my most successful suspension designs over the years.”

170mm Enduro That Doesn’t Ride Like One

With 170mm front and rear travel, NIGHTTRAIN is built for steep, technical descents, bike park laps, and high-speed terrain. But unlike many bikes in this category, RMU focused heavily on ride feel, tuning the platform to be responsive, playful, and efficient. A 65mm stroke driving 170mm of travel creates a supportive, poppy mid-stroke, giving riders the ability to generate speed, boost terrain, and stay active on the trail.
